Title£ºThe current use of qualitative research in information systems

Abstract£ºIn this presentation I will discuss the current use of qualitative research in the field of information systems. I will show how qualitative research has become generally accepted within IS. The mainstream nature of qualitative research can be seen by considering the following. First, since 1997 every Best Paper at MIS Quarterly has been of a qualitative nature (the only exception being a non-empirical conceptual essay in 2004). As those of us in the IS field know, MIS Quarterly is regularly ranked as the top academic journal in information systems. Second, all of the major journals in information systems now have senior or associate editors with expertise in qualitative research methods. Third, the defensive statements that authors used to make about their research methods in qualitative papers seem to have disappeared from the IS research literature. Hence, I think we can say that qualitative research has moved from the margins to the mainstream. Most IS scholars now accept that qualitative research (along with quantitative and other kinds of research) can provide important new insights and knowledge about the development, use and application of information systems by individuals, organizations and society.

Title£ºCapturing Value through IT and Business Alignment

Abstract£º Though information technologies have the potential to provide benefits in the form of productivity, consumer relationships and profitability, it is clear that not all firms succeed in leveraging these potential benefits.  How can firms capture the strategic value inherent in information technologies?  Alignment between the strategies and processes for managing information technology and business strategies and capabilities is an important, but often elusive way of capturing organizational value through IT.  This presentation highlights how firms can build alignment between IT and business through appropriate organization designs, structures, and processes.  Examples from successful firms will be used to illustrate these ideas.
